Blown A Wish

Listen / Download

It’s not always the same, but it is always close–you stand on a hill near your childhood home, and it doesn’t look like the actual hill, but you know it is.  The hill is still green, which is something given the time of year.  The sky is a humming gray, so the green on the grass hovers in the air between the blades and your eyes.  And the wind, always the wind, rushes first down the hill opposite you, through the valley, and loud into your face.  It’s not a crippling blow, but it does jar you.  Bracing against this present absence, swatting the occasional leaf that hurdles toward your squinting face, it hits you:  Summer is behind you.  There is no wind.  There is only sun and palms and pools.  A warm void.  So you let go, not looking back.  You succumb to the wind, it lifts you by your heels, and you are briefly weightless.  Floating.  Then you begin to fall, and all you can see is the blinding sky.  You fall, but you aren’t afraid.  You fall into a wonderfully warm pool.  Completely submerged, eyes open, hugged by and hugging the warmth.  You swim to the surface, and break into the air.  You inhale, it is hot and fragrant. The sky, heavy blue.  Endless blue, water touching horizon and horizon of blue.  Blue heat.  The future, warm and unrestrained.  Always the same, but always new.
