Eyes Up

He remembers the uniform.  The dressy navy blue shorts with the white oxford tucked into them.  And the tie in a loose knot, tied most mornings by his father.  He remembers the blazer that his shoulders never quite filled out, with the silly insignia stitched on the pocket. His shoes were heavily shined in the early days of the term, even though he hated it, and he sometimes used stones to scratch the glassy toes of their gloss.  The socks climbed up his ankles and clung awkwardly between the knee and the shoe.  He remembers the bookbag, remembers its weight, and walking to school in the early hours.  Some days his father would walk with him, and on some of those days–the days they were late–his father would start to gallop and shout, “Double Time!”  He remembers the air getting colder, and the first frost, and recalls the wildfire leaves on the trees.  The wind would grab handfuls in the gusts, and toss them across the yard.  Most things were new then, so everything felt like it would go on a long time.

An autumn-is-coming list.  Mostly glistening tunes, with a hint of that melancholic pang that comes with the earth starting to tilt ever-so-much away from the sun. There are gobs of talent on the list; from the straight-forward blow-outs of Bradford Cox, to the obscured-future/retro jams of John Carpenter.  Kurt Vile plays his matchstick wanderings, Wild Nothing sky-gazes, and Circulatory System puts a staggering amount of joy into their twenty-four second contribution.  Watch whatever goes by go by to this collection.
